Atché i Farré, Rafael

Barcelona 1854 - 1923

7 Sculptor

He began his art studies at La Llotja, the Barcelona School of Fine Arts, and shortly afterwards started working with the sculptors the Vallmitjana brothers. He went to France, Italy and Britain to broaden his education.

His work is regarded as representative of realistic narrative sculpture applied to the architecture of buildings constructed in the Modernista period. He worked with architects such as J. Domènech i Estapà on the Hospital Clínic (1904; Casanova, 141-149), and with this same architect and E. Sagnier on the reliefs on the pediment of the Palau de Justícia (Courthouse,1887-1908; Passeig de Lluís Companys, 14).

He also did funeral sculptures, examples of which can be seen in the South-west Cemetery on Montjuïc (Mare de Déu del Port, 56-58), and made religious images to order. Some of the sculptures on the Monument to Columbus (1888; Plaça del Portal de la Pau) and the Waterfall in Parc de la Ciutadella were made by him.
