A member of a family of artists - both his grandfather and his father were mural decorators -, he was trained at La Llotja, the Barcelona School of Fine Arts, and went to Paris, where he worked with Cambon.
Upon his return, in 1889, he went into partnership with his uncle, M. Moragas, setting up theMNAC. Barcelona. Calveras, Mérida, Sagristà

company Alarma i Moragas. Throughout his career he took part in the shows put on by L. Graner dedicated to Modernista theatre.
His production was not confined to Barcelona. He also worked in Madrid, Buenos Aires and Havana, where he was very successful.
In 1927 he became director of the stage design section of the Institut del Teatre de Barcelona (Barcelona Theatre Institute).
