Pey i Farriol, Josep

Barcelona 1875 - 1956

59 Draughtsman, decorator and painter

He studied at La Llotja, the Barcelona School of Fine Arts, while working in the workshop of J. Coll, and later won a travel grant. During this period he worked at restoring and copying famous Spanish painters. In 1897 he started to work with O. Junyent.

His knowledge of the different artistic techniques and his qualities as a designer led him to work with many other prominent Modernista artists. His designs were used in marquetry work for furniture, cartoons for stained glass windows, decorations for vases, etc.

He was one of the most active collaborators of G. Homar, a friend of his, in designing marquetry work for his furniture and decorative panels. One of the best examples of their work together is the furniture of Casa Lleó Morera (1905; Passeig de Gràcia, 35), by the architect L. Domènech i Montaner, and the decorative panel Berenar al camp (Picnic, circa 1905; MNAC collection). He also designed decorative panels for S. Marco and J. Busquets, and the painters S. García and Vilaró i Valls, and produced designs for the ceramicist A. Serra and for the tapestries of S. Junyent.

As well as this, he did illustrations, contributing to publications such as Hojas Selectas and Mercurio, and designed bookplates.

Through his often anonymous work he helped to propagate the Modernista forms and language as applied to all sorts of objects and decorations.

In 1912 he started to teach drawing at the Barcelona School of Fine Arts and in this last period collaborated actively with Jeroni Martorell at the Historical Monuments Conservation Service.
