Ramon Casas, etrat de Ramon Pichot (Portrait of Ramon Pichot) (© MNAC. Barcelona. Calveras, Mérida, Sagristà)

This painter's first contact with the art world was in Barcelona, but he trained in Paris. The first exhibition in which he took part was in 1894 in Barcelona and he received an honourable mention. Shortly afterwards, he exhibited at Sala Parés, together with R. Casas. Following a trip to Andalusia, in 1899 he held a very successful exhibition at Els Quatre Gats and another in Madrid with drawings of people he had met on his travels. In 1898 he began to develop another type of painting in which the figure was the main focus, as for example L'ofrena (The Offering, 1898; MNAC collection). He held various exhibitions in Paris, especially with works on Spanish themes, which were extremely popular in France at that time. He was a member of La Colla del Safrà (The Saffron Gang), but also had contact with artists from the previous generation. He illustrated books by S. Rusiñol, who had a very similar pictorial style to his.
