Exhibition: Ramon Casas: A Much Yearned Modernity

From 10.11.2016 to 19.02.2017

Organised by Consorci del Patrimoni de Sitges, Ajuntament de Sitges and Fundació "la Caixa"

Ramon Casas. Female Nude, 1894. Oil on canvas © Museu Cau Ferrat

The exhibition will include a series of some 200 works grouped in five main areas and comprising a very careful selection of some of the most emblematic works by this Barcelona painter.

The show´s narrative will be enriched by a very select group of works from an extremely notable repertoire of artists who served as his inspiration or exerted a certain influence in him. The inclusion of visual reference works by these painters, who influenced the inflections of his poetics, with figures such as Carolus-Duran, Toulouse-Lautrec, Manet, Sargent, Degas, Bastien-Lepage, Whistler, Rusiñol or Sorolla, is reflected by the similar role of master that Casas played for such important artists as Torres-Garcia, Picasso or Julio Romero de Torres, who will also be represented by their work in the exhibition.

The exhibition will travel to CaixaForum Madrid and Palma de Mallorca throughout 2017.

The Museu Nacional d´Art de Catalunya (MNAC) is preparing an exhibition to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the birth of Ramon Casas (1866-1932). The show will bring to light an interesting series of previously unseen visual works by the artist.

This exceptional collection of works by Casas that is conserved by the museum has recently been enriched by a very original, strange and unique addition: a series of 12 Chinese shadow puppets designed by Casas and cut and made by Josep Meifrèn, brother of the painter Eliseu Meifrèn and member of the circle of friends of Els Quatre Gats. This is a unique collection of its kind that establishes a clear relationship with modernity.

The exhibition will also include other visual elements such as posters, photographs, drawings, invitations and programmes, many of which have never been seen before and form part of the museum´s collection. All this artistic and documentary material will help to contextualise the origins of the recreational practices that symbolised the need for escape that Barcelona artists felt at the time, such as Chinese shadows, puppet shows or an interest in the circus.

Within the new concept of modern art that was formulated at the end of the 19th century, the difference and hierarchy between the various artistic genres began to become less distinct. Graphic art consequently became the subject of enormous interest and experimentation on the part of painters such as Toulouse-Lautrec, Bonnard and Mucha, among others, a fact that also benefitted specialist illustrators who began to be seen as artists. In addition, technical innovations in printmaking which allowed for increasingly rapid methods of reproduction of higher quality and in larger print runs, combined with the increasing presence of advertising as part of contemporary culture, definitively broke down the previous boundaries which had confined graphic illustration to books and magazines and this medium now took possession of the street in the form of posters.

The exhibition "Only Those Who Fight Survive: L´École de Nancy and the Political and Social Questions of its Period" presents l´École de Nancy through a heretofore unseen prism: that of the political commitment of Emile Galle, Victor Prouve and other members of the Art Nouveau movement in Nancy.

The relationship between art and politics is explained to a certain extent by the search for total and social art yet also by its historical context.
Firstly, visitors discover the particular dimension that Art Nouveau had in Nancy due to Lorraine´s convulsive history, the trauma that arose from losing territories annexed by Germany in 1871 and Nancy´s role as a border town and last bastion against the German threat. Then the show covers the decisive action of Émile Gallé, l´École de Nancy´s first president.
Several works illustrate his stance in favour of oppressed peoples such as the Armenians, Irish, or Romanian Jews. His commitment in the Dreyfus affair went beyond the arts. Here, we discover the intellectual Gallé and his public and political involvement. Victor Prouvé, who would succeed Gallé
as president of l´École de Nancy, had a diferent political sensibility, influenced by anarchism and his friend Charles Keller, an old communard. The exhibition reveals Victor Prouvé´s evolution and his ornamentation for buildings, in which his republican commitment is apparent. This led him to be elected municipal counsellor in 1912.
Finally, the last section covers the venture of the Nancy People´s University and People´s House. Members and sympathisers of l´École de Nancy joined his educational project and participated in several initiatives.

The show, which has received the certification of "Exhibition of National Interest"
from the French Ministry of Culture and Communication, lets us discover the intellectual modernity of l´École de Nancy, which mobilised on issues that are still topical today.

The Museum Thyssen-Bornemisza, in collaboration with the Munch Museet of Oslo, will host the first major exhibition to be held on the Norwegian artist in Madrid since 1984. The presentation will examine Edvard Much´s long and prolific career through eighty works by the painter, half of them from the collection of the Munch Museet.

Structured by themes, it will explore the representation of the human figure in various settings: the coast, the patient´s room, the abyss, the green room, the forest, night, the artist´s studio. In order to show the radical nature of his artistic language, the exhibition will study the interplay between flat and sinuous forms, the ambiguity of opposites, symbolic colour, the expressive deformation of the body and the use of experimental textures and engraving techniques. Edvard Munch will ultimately analyse the artistic strategies used by the painter to orient space towards a psychic dimension and convert his compositions into a lasting truth that symbolises the human condition.

Art study days: Edvard Munch

On 22 and 23 October 2015, the Museum´s Department of Modern Painting is organising art study days in connection with the temporary exhibition on Edvard Munch. Aimed at students and teachers, as well as the general public, they will take a new look at Munch´s work as well as vindicating his status as one of the founders of modernity.
