Strand 1. Art Nouveau Cities: Between Cosmopolitanism and Local Tradition

One of the objectives of the Art Nouveau European Route and its magazine coupDefouet is to overcome the “large-centre” perspective which, up until a few years ago, predominated in the study of history of art, architecture and the applied and decorative arts. Now we propose going beyond the European context, even inverting the problem, and analysing how the peripheries also became creative centres to disseminate images and ideas.

Strand 2. The Historiography of Art Nouveau (Looking Back on the Past)

History has never been innocent and Art Nouveau does not escape from this premise. We would like to reflect on how the history of Art Nouveau has been shaped and how it has become integrated into the discourse on contemporary art and avant garde movements while never abandoning contemplation of political and social interpretations of the movement through the different ways of constructing history.

Strand 3. The Challenges Facing Art Nouveau Heritage (Looking Towards the Future)

Art Nouveau legacy has become an identifying icon in many European cities and this has caused curiosity about it to grow. Yet it is an extremely fragile heritage in terms of the complexity of materials employed and because often such heritage is located in private spaces that were never designed to be accessible to the general public. However, aware that such heritage should be publicised, it becomes necessary to analyse conditions so that preservation and study are compatible with its use by citizens.

Strand 4. Research and Doctoral Theses in Progresss

Researchers and research groups – whether or not they are linked to universities or public centres – present their projects to create a discussion space where both young postgraduate students who are working on their doctoral theses and more experienced researchers in the field of Art Nouveau can share their analyses and opinions.

Strand 5. Crafts in the Origins of Modern Design

During the Art Nouveau years, a new manner of conceiving the applied arts and crafts emerged, one which Nikolaus Pevsner pinpointed years ago as the origin of modern design. Current studies have broadened this horizon. Art Nouveau is not the sole foundation of design but nevertheless one of the most significant. In this section, we aim to discuss how the applied arts and crafts have also contributed to defining the character of Art Nouveau cities.

Strand 6. Special Session: New Art Nouveau Experiences and Resources

Growing interest from diverse spheres in Art Nouveau heritage has multiplied research, study, dissemination and organisational activities related to this heritage in the last decade. This special session will present five specific cases from around the European continent that provide new experiences and new resources for researchers, organisations and the general public.
